Looking back of some cult classic comedy shows that has graced our screens - British Comedy

I am aware this will be difficult to showcase all the great comedy shows that have came from UK soil, but after looking on streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime etc I came up with the realisation just how many great British titles there truly was.

Some Girls (2012-2014)

The lives and loves of a group of quirky 16-year-old high school girls who live within the same south London housing estate.

It first graced our screens on BBC three. For those that weren't aware of what it was like being a teenager girl in a British school this pretty much summarises it up. Some girls had some of the most tongues in cheek humour, the jokes and even the maturity of the content was far greater for its time. It was a major dissatisfaction that this suddenly stopped. It wouldn't be the same if it was to be brought back without the original cast members as they made the show original.

If you are feeling sentimental and wanted to relive a glimpse of the past lucky for you it's on BBC Iplayer or BBC & ITV new app Britbox.

Inbetweeners (2008-2010)

Follows four friends and their antics during their final years of school.

For those that were curious, this is what it was like going to UK schools as a male teenager. The crude jokes the ridiculous mannerisms it but that's why everyone fell in love with the show. They fell in love with it as everyone was able to relate to it. The reason why it still lives on is that it didn't change to impress anyone or it didn't push the limits to offend anyone. Everyone you speak too at least has one favourite moment from the show that's how you know it will always fall down as arguably one of the greats.
This show brings out great fond memories. After 3 series and 2 movies it's safe to say the UK well and truly loves this show.

Inbetweeners can be found on 4ondemand that's all the series' and both movies. All you need to do is create an account and watch it for free.

Peep Show (2003-2015)

Mark and Jez are a couple of twenty-something roommates who have nothing in common - except for the fact that their lives are anything but normal. Mayhem ensues as the pair strive to cope with day-to-day life.

This was the first comedy show where it was shown from a 1st person view. Normally with most comedy shows it's multiple cameras to get all the facial expressions and all the people in the shot, this is done if you were that person that's why it's considered incredibly creative for its time.
It's the high-brow type of comedy and it isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea but the fans that do love the show are loyal and still love it to this day.

It's the type of show you will find yourself quoting some of the lines of the show without even thinking.
a lot of the moments of the show still resonates with the UK to this day with the jokes towards the government etc.

You can watch all the seasons Netflix and all four (Netflix requires a subscription)

The IT Crowd (2006-2013)

The show is set in a London office centring around three staff members of its IT department, namely, Maurice, Roy and their department head Jen Barber who knows nothing about IT.

It ran for 7 years having a total of 4 series in total. It's very tongue and cheek shows the highs and lows about what it's like to work in IT. Everyone low-key wanted a job in IT after watching this purely to say the famous line "Have you tried turning it on and off again"
It's insane it's bonkers but to be perfectly honest it's just one of them shows once you've watched one episode you find yourself just watching more and more without realising. I like this show for many reasons many people can relate to the humour of work-life, when you first start a job you tell yourself you will not become friends with people but in the blink of an eye you're close friends with each other.

You can relive the show all 4 series on all four just create an account and you can watch them all for free.

Gavin And Stacey (2007-2008)

Gavin and Stacey have been continuing their romance on-line and on the telephone for the last six months. Now they want to be together but will their friends and family let them?

This is one of them shows that has continued and will always be considered a great bit of UK cultural James Corden and Ruth jones both created this masterpiece that will arguably go down in history. It just has comedy but it also has the heartfelt moments. It first hit UK screens in 2007 until 2008 which was a total of 3 series. After the long hiatus, it returned for a Christmas special in 2019 over 11.6 million people turned in to view the show that just shows how much this show lives on in our lives.

You can relive Gavin and Stacey on Netflix (Would require a subscription)

Only Fools and Horses (1981-2003)

A comedy that follows two brothers from London's rough Peckham estate as they wheel and deal through several dodgy deals and search for the big score that'll make them millionaires.

The show focuses around the trotter family, all of whom are kind enough to indulge its patriarch, cheekily named Del Boy, with his various “get rich quick” schemes as a Cockney shop trader — even if his schemes mostly turn out to be a whole load of bollocks. It will go down in history because the comedy still resonates with people in today's generation. It's one of them shows the entire family could watch together and you will not have to hide their eyes or ears because of inappropriate imagery or jokes I mean some of the jokes may go over their heads but it's a family-friendly show.

it is on Netflix you can watch and enjoy them. (Would require a subscription)

Black books (2000-2004)

Comedians Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey star in the much-loved offbeat sitcom about bad-tempered, eccentric bookshop owner Bernard Black and his long-suffering assistant Manny. Bernard has no use for people outside his shop - and sometimes, not much use for the people inside it, either. He prefers to spend his time reading, drinking and smoking. Manny, assisted by Bernard's oldest friend, Fran, who runs Nifty Gifty, a shop down the way, frequently tries to adjust Bernard's attitude and get him to be more social.

Despite rarely making a sale in his envy-inducing London bookshop — à la Hugh Grant in Notting Hill, but with 50 per cent more grime — Black Books’ misanthropic lead Bernard Black comfortably manages to keep to his daily routine of smoking, drinking, and berating customers with limited interruption, eschewing unnecessary contact with anyone who isn’t his two friends. (It would be three friends, but we don’t consider “books” as people. Sorry.)

Just don’t be deceived, dear literati. The series may maintain a melancholic aura, but Bernard is mostly a goofy dude who invites Jehovah’s Witnesses into his home to avoid doing taxes. We love a spontaneous man!

Still Game (2002 - 2019)

`Still Game' is a long-running Scottish sitcom, set in the fictional area of Craiglang in Glasgow and featuring characters from the series `Chewin' the Fat'. The show began in theatre before moving to radio and television, and proved so popular among its Scottish audience that it was broadcast nationally as of the fourth season. Episodes follow evergreen pensioners and lifelong best friends Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade, as the pair get up to mischief trying to familiarise themselves with contemporary gadgets and culture, and cope with the trials and tribulations of modern life.

This more me is arguably one of jaw hurting funny show. Everyone plays off each other perfectly, the biggest relisation from this is that you could tell that everyone was enjoying their characters. You find yourself wanting to learn more about the characters you braced yourself everytime Jack and victor went into the clansman to give the barman their traditional banter. It's definitely a show I would recommended to watch.

You could watch all the series on Netflix (Subscription would be required)

Fresh meat

A comedy that follows a group of six students about to embark on the most exciting period of their lives so far, university.

This was a show about peoples experiences of university now for everyone who thinks University is studying and exams it is but to the everyday person this pretty somes up the experience. It's one of them comedies that generates realism and names others relate to it.

The Mighty Boosh

Vince Noir, king of Howard Moon works in the dysfunctional Zooniverse under the slightly crazed Bob Fossil. The program follows their surreal adventures through time and space.

A lot of people will believe this is slightly crazy and wacky. They would be right. Being as it's arguably one of the most creative bizarre and all-round crazy show you will ever see in you entire life yet you won;t be able to get some of the scenes out of your head. Its one of them shows that you find yourself being lost in the weird and wonderful things about this show.

There is many many more that has been left out, I always just tired of seeing that Britian doesn't have any funny I will be posting more in the future to showcase britans comedy shows in the future.
